Procrastination
Procrastination is a problem for many people. It can take over your life if you let it. If this is a serious challenge in your life, you may want to seek help from a counselor or a therapist. But the first step is helping yourself.
The best first step is to identify the cause. Why do you put off what needs to be done? Surprisingly enough, most people don’t procrastinate because they are lazy. It is usually for other reasons. There are often more deep rooted issues.
Do you procrastinate because you are resentful towards someone? Or maybe it is due to feelings of anger. If you want to get to the bottom of the real issue, you must ask yourslef these types of questions.
Once you have identified the reasons behind it, you have to confront these emotions before you can overcome them. Speaking to a therapist can help you to uncover the underlying reasons for your procrastination, and to improve your self esteem. They can also provide you with the best method to help you overcome procrastination and get moving in the right direction.
Next, you need to take action. It is not enough to recognize you have a problem, and identify what it is. Now that you know what is going on, you have to take steps to fix it. If you find yourself often forgetting appointments, get a notebook and write down all the important dates and tasks everyday. Make this an ongoing habit, and check it everyday to ensure that you are on schedule to completing your tasks in time.
Do not give in to the temptation to place the responsibility on the planner. It is there to help you remember, it is not a cure all. The onus is still on you. Avoid buying more than one planner, as this will cause unnecessary confusion. It is also a good excuse, because you looked in the wrong planner.
There are many reasons why people procrastinate, and once you have identified the cause, you should work with your therapist to draw up a reasonable plan to overcome your problem. If your issue is with poor time management, learn to plan your day realistically. If on the other hand your issue is with prioritization, you will need to separate your tasks based on importance and do what is most important first.
Remember to be realistic with your expectations, and persevere! Just like habits take time to form, it also takes time to overcome.
